The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has authorized a tariff adjustment for telecom operators, including MTN, Glo, Airtel, and 9Mobile, citing prevailing market conditions as the driving factor behind the decision.

The approval allows for a maximum 50% increase in existing tariffs, a figure significantly lower than the over 100% adjustment some operators had initially proposed.

The Commission stated that this decision reflects ongoing reforms within the sector aimed at ensuring sustainability while balancing the needs of consumers.

In a statement released on Monday, January 20, 2025, Reuben Muoka, the NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, confirmed that the adjustments would adhere to the 2013 NCC Cost Study’s tariff bands.

He also noted that each request would undergo individual review in line with the Commission’s standard procedures for tariff changes.

He said: “Tariff rates have remained unchanged since 2013, despite rising operational costs for telecom providers.

“The approved adjustment seeks to bridge the gap between escalating operational expenses and stagnant tariffs while maintaining service quality for consumers.”

According to him, the adjustments were aimed at supporting telecom operators in sustaining infrastructure investments and driving innovation.

Muoka highlighted that this would ultimately improve network quality, expand coverage, and enhance customer service across the board.

Acknowledging public concerns, Muoka stated that the decision followed extensive consultations with stakeholders from both the public and private sectors.

“The NCC remains committed to protecting telecom consumers while ensuring the industry’s sustainability, including the indigenous vendors and suppliers who are integral to the telecommunications ecosystem,” he added.

The operators were directed to implement the tariff adjustments transparently, ensuring fairness and clear communication with the public about the new rates.

The regulator also stressed the importance of demonstrating measurable service improvements alongside the changes.

Reaffirming its commitment to fostering a robust telecommunications sector, the Commission said it would continue to work toward a balanced environment that benefits all stakeholders, from consumers to operators.

The Commission underscored its dedication to advancing Nigeria’s digital economy through resilient and inclusive industry practices.

“The NCC will persist in engaging with stakeholders to create a telecommunications ecosystem that prioritizes connectivity, sustainability, and consumer protection,” Muoka noted.
