President Bola Tinubu has approved the recruitment of 8,800 young Nigerians as Health Fellows across the country.

The mass recruitment initiative under the Presidential Health Fellows Programme aims to bolster transparency and drive improvements in Nigeria’s health sector.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Mohammed Pate, announced the initiative in a broadcast on Monday 20 January 2025, unveiling a dedicated portal for applications.

The programme, he said, aims to recruit young Nigerians from all Local Government Areas (LGAs) to oversee the construction of 8,800 new primary healthcare facilities across the country in the coming years.

Prof. Pate emphasized that the initiative is part of the government’s efforts to revitalize the health sector while addressing youth unemployment.

He outlined the government’s Four-Point Agenda for the health sector, which includes doubling the number of Federal Government Primary Health Centers (PHCs) from the current 8,300 facilities.

The agenda also includes training 120,000 frontline health workers and the disbursement of over ₦45 billion to PHCs through an enhanced Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF).

These measures are designed to ensure improved health outcomes nationwide, Pate explained.

According to the Minister, successful candidates recruited under the Health Fellows Programme will serve as accountability officers, tasked with maintaining the integrity and operational standards of the new healthcare facilities.

The selection process will involve State-level multi-screening exercises conducted in each LGA, the Minister added.

Encouraging eligible Nigerians to apply, Prof. Pate highlighted the critical role the fellows will play in ensuring the transparency and efficiency of ongoing healthcare projects.

Applicants are required to submit their applications via the official portal, www.healthfellows.ng, before January 27, 2025.

The recruitment initiative reflects the government’s commitment to revitalizing the nation’s healthcare system and fostering accountability in the execution of its health-related projects.
