Prince Harry breaks silence on Meghan Markle’s online abuse during surprise appearance at New York Summit
Prince Harry made an unexpected but impactful appearance at the 2025 Nexus Global Summit in New York City, where he opened up about the devastating online abuse his wife, Meghan Markle, endured.
Speaking on the importance of digital well-being and social connection, Harry told attendees that in 2018, Meghan was “the most trolled person in the world.”
Par Marca.com, the Duke of Sussex, 40, spoke from personal experience, using his family’s challenges to advocate for safer digital spaces.
“There was a lived experience,” he said, adding that their involvement in digital reform through the Archewell Foundation was inspired by meeting parents who had lost their children to the harmful effects of social media-many through suicide.
That tragic reality pushed the couple to focus on combating online toxicity.
Harry emphasized that as people struggle more in their daily lives, their compassion often “shrinks,” which makes the digital environment even more dangerous.
He encouraged a more thoughtful and empathetic approach to how we interact online, particularly for younger generations.
The emotional toll of digital harassmentMeghan Markle began facing extreme public scrutiny as soon as her relationship with Harry became public in 2017.
After their wedding in 2018, the criticism escalated dramatically.
By 2019, during her pregnancy with their first child, Meghan described the experience as “almost unsurvivable.”
In a candid interview with Oprah Winfrey, she admitted that at her lowest point, she had suicidal thoughts due to the relentless negative media coverage and online bullying.
“I didn’t want to be alive anymore,” Meghan recalled.
“I was up at night just thinking, ‘How is all of this being created?'”
Her emotional vulnerability shed light on the darker side of fame in the digital age.
In 2020, the couple stepped down from their official royal duties and relocated to Montecito, California, where they continue their advocacy work through Archewell.
Their foundation has since launched initiatives to improve online safety, encourage responsible tech use, and support mental health, including projects like the “Lost Screen” memorial, honoring young lives lost to online harm.
Prince Harry’s surprise remarks at the Nexus Summit served as a powerful reminder that the internet, while full of potential, also holds real risks-especially when compassion gives way to cruelty.
As he told the crowd, we must challenge harmful systems and build digital communities grounded in kindness and understanding.
Now living a quieter life with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, Harry and Meghan remain dedicated to ensuring future generations grow up in a more humane digital world.
