The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed counterfeit and substandard products worth ₦1.367 billion in Abuja.
The items, including drugs, food products, cosmetics, and chemicals, were seized from non-compliant manufacturers, suppliers, and sellers or voluntarily surrendered by industry stakeholders.
Speaking at the destruction exercise on Thursday, NAFDAC’s Director General (DG), Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to safeguarding public health by eliminating harmful products from the supply chain.
The destroyed items included psychoactive substances, antibiotics, antimalarials, herbal remedies, mislabeled food products, and counterfeit cleaning agents.
Prof. Adeyeye, who was represented at the exercise by a Director in the Office of the DG, Festus Ukadike, revealed that over ₦120 billion worth of harmful products had been destroyed in 2024, including 6,000 bags of re-bagged rice seized from criminal cartels in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The agency condemned these practices and vowed to continue its intensified surveillance and enforcement efforts to ensure compliance, while prosecuting offenders.
Prof. Adeyeye praised stakeholders, security agencies, and the media for their support in the fight against counterfeit goods.
She emphasized NAFDAC’s proactive engagement with political, traditional, and faith-based leaders to combat the threats posed by counterfeit products.
Consumers were encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspicious products, as the agency remains committed to ensuring the availability of only safe, high-quality goods in the market.
