The Federal Government has announced a 14-month deadline for the completion of the Abuja-Kaduna-Zaria-Kano dual carriageway project.
This decision comes after the termination of some sections of the road previously contracted to by Julius Berger Nigeria.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, said the contract was canceled due to irreconcilable differences, including the contractor’s proposal to extend the project timeline by an additional three years, which was deemed unacceptable.
Umahi explained that the project has undergone revisions to enhance its durability and functionality, given its critical role in improving infrastructure and connectivity across Nigeria’s northern region.
These adjustments include a 10-kilometer extension at the Kano end and a 5-kilometer extension at the Abuja end, aimed at preventing alignment issues that could disrupt connectivity.
During an inspection visit on Wednesday, Umahi, accompanied by Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammad Idris, outlined the government’s commitment to delivering the project on schedule.
He noted that the road had been divided into three segments to ensure efficient and high-quality construction.
Palliative works are currently being carried out on damaged sections of the Abuja-Kaduna stretch to provide a pothole-free experience while awaiting the re-award of the contract.
Umahi emphasized that the road is being designed to last between 50 and 100 years, ensuring a long-lasting legacy.
He urged all stakeholders to set aside political differences and focus on the timely delivery of a world-class highway, stressing that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is determined to ease the hardships faced by road users.
Umahi also acknowledged the support of the National Assembly, noting that the project’s timeline has been reinforced through collaborative efforts.
In his remarks, Minister Mohammad Idris reassured Nigerians that progress inspections would be conducted regularly, and updates would be shared with the public.
He expressed confidence in the competence of the project team and reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to improving infrastructure nationwide.
Members of the National Assembly pledged their backing through adequate budgetary allocations and oversight to ensure the project’s successful completion for the benefit of all Nigerians.
