As preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections gain momentum, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it has received applications from no fewer than 110 political associations seeking registration as political parties.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, disclosed this on Wednesday, stating that the Commission is currently processing the requests in accordance with existing laws, regulations, and guidelines.
He said: “As of Monday, June 23, 2025, the Commission had received letters of intent from 110 associations wishing to register as political parties.
“We are carefully reviewing these requests in line with the procedure laid out in our legal framework. All applications submitted have been acknowledged, except for six which came in recently. These will be acknowledged before the end of the week.”
Yakubu urged interested individuals and organisations to consult the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties, 2022, to ensure compliance with the required procedures.
INEC also published a full list of the 110 associations, including their proposed names, abbreviations, contact addresses, as well as the names of their chairpersons and secretaries.
Some of the more notable names among the applicants include the Advanced Democratic Alliance (ADA), a coalition set up mainly to wrestle power from the incumbent occupier of Aso Rock Villa.
Obidient Peoples Party (OPP) is another association leading the cause of the former Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi.
Newsworth24 reports that political associations frequently emerge in the build-up to elections, though many fail to secure final registration or survive long-term due to lack of structure, funding, or widespread support.
The Commission has yet to make a final decision on the registration of any of the groups.
Upon verification of their compliance with legal requirements including evidence of national spread, functional offices, and membership registers, INEC will determine which associations qualify for full registration as political parties.
